Are MEWPs and Access Platforms the Same

News

You may have heard of an access platform referred to as a mobile elevated work platform (MEWP). While some access platforms can be considered MEWPs, they aren’t the same thing. Simply put, a MEWP is a type of access platform that is mobile. MEWPs are powered access machines that can be moved whilst in use. Access platforms can refer to MEWPs, along with other equipment such as ladders and scaffolding that isn’t mobile.

Understanding the key difference

While you may see the terms used interchangeably, keep in mind their main difference is based on mobility and accessibility. Not all access platforms are mobile; for example, a stationary scissor lift that can only go up and down and offers no mobility would just be considered an access platform and not a MEWP.

Knowing which access platforms to use

There are many access platforms to choose from, but how does one go about deciding? When choosing the right machine, it’s important to consider asking yourself the following:

  • What is the environment you’re working in?
  • Does the task require mobility?
  • How high up are you working?
  • Are you working in a tight space?
  • What is the terrain you’re working on?

Being able to answer these questions will help in selecting the right machine for hire.
